Summer Injuries – Stay Healthy, Train Smart & Get Back to Sport Faster

For athletes, active adults, and families in Dallas, Plano, Frisco, Prosper, McKinney, and The Colony

Summer is when everyone starts moving more.

Kids are in camps. Athletes are training for fall sports. Adults are getting back into golf, pickleball, running, lifting, and weekend tournaments. The weather is hotter, schedules are different, and the body gets asked to do a lot more than it may be ready for.

That is when injuries start showing up.

At Performance Medicine & Sports Therapy, we help athletes and active families stay healthy through the summer with sports physical therapy, performance training, return-to-sport programs, and free injury and movement assessments.

Whether you are dealing with pain now or trying to prevent an injury before the season starts, our team can help you figure out what is going on and build a plan.

No referral required. Free injury and movement assessments available. Open 7 days a week with early and late hours.

What are the most common summer injuries?

Some of the most common summer injuries we see in Plano, Frisco, Dallas, Prosper, McKinney, and The Colony include:

  • Ankle sprains
  • Knee pain
  • Shin splints
  • Hamstring strains
  • Hip flexor strains
  • Shoulder pain
  • Elbow pain
  • Low back pain
  • Achilles pain
  • Foot pain
  • Overuse injuries
  • Tendon pain
  • Throwing injuries
  • Jumping and landing injuries
  • General soreness that does not go away

Most of these injuries do not happen randomly.

They usually happen because the body is not prepared for the amount of stress being placed on it. That may be from increasing training too quickly, poor movement mechanics, weakness, mobility restrictions, fatigue, heat, or not recovering well enough between sessions.

Why do summer injuries happen so often?

Summer creates the perfect setup for injury.

Athletes go from school routines to summer camps, select teams, tournaments, private training, strength programs, and skill work. Adults go from less activity to more golf, more pickleball, more running, more travel, and more outdoor workouts.

The problem is not movement.

The problem is doing too much, too fast, without the right preparation.

Your body needs time to adapt. When your muscles, tendons, joints, and nervous system are not prepared for the load, pain usually follows.

Should I keep training if something hurts?

It depends.

Some soreness is normal. Sharp pain, swelling, limping, weakness, pain that changes your mechanics, or pain that keeps coming back is not something to ignore.

A good rule of thumb:

If pain is changing the way you move, train, run, lift, throw, jump, or compete, you need to get it looked at.

That does not always mean you need to stop everything. A lot of athletes can continue training with the right modifications. The key is knowing what to push, what to avoid, and what needs to be addressed.

That is where a free injury and movement assessment can help.

What is a free injury and movement assessment?

A free injury and movement assessment at PMST is a quick way to understand what may be causing your pain or movement issue.

During the assessment, our team can look at things like:

  • Pain location
  • Movement mechanics
  • Strength deficits
  • Mobility restrictions
  • Balance and control
  • Running, jumping, squatting, or lifting patterns
  • Sport-specific movement issues
  • Whether PT, training, or further medical care may be needed

The goal is simple: give you clarity.

You should not have to guess whether something is serious, whether your athlete can keep playing, or whether you need a bigger plan. We can help you understand what is going on and what the next step should be.

Why see PMST for summer sports injuries?

PMST is built around the active person and athlete.

We are not just trying to get pain down for a day. We are trying to help you move better, build strength, recover properly, and return to the things you actually care about.

That may mean getting back to football, volleyball, baseball, basketball, soccer, track, golf, tennis, pickleball, lifting, running, or just being able to work and live without pain.

Our team can help with:

  • Sports physical therapy
  • Injury rehab
  • Return-to-sport testing
  • Strength and conditioning
  • Performance training
  • Mobility work
  • Recovery services
  • Movement assessments
  • Injury prevention
  • Athlete development

Why training matters during the summer

Summer is one of the best times to build.

For youth athletes, summer is where a lot of separation happens. It is the window to get stronger, faster, more explosive, more durable, and more confident before the fall season.

But training has to be done correctly.

Good training should improve:

  • Strength
  • Speed
  • Power
  • Agility
  • Balance
  • Landing mechanics
  • Core control
  • Mobility
  • Conditioning
  • Injury resilience

Bad training just adds fatigue.

At PMST, our training is built to improve performance while also reducing injury risk. We want athletes to be strong enough, mobile enough, and prepared enough to handle the demands of their sport.

What is return-to-sport rehab?

Return-to-sport rehab is the bridge between “I feel better” and “I am ready to compete.”

This is where a lot of athletes get stuck.

Pain goes down, but they are not actually ready for the speed, cutting, jumping, contact, throwing, sprinting, or fatigue demands of real competition.

Return-to-sport rehab helps answer better questions:

Can the athlete accelerate and decelerate safely?
Can they jump and land with control?
Can they cut without pain or compensation?
Can they tolerate practice volume?
Can they perform under fatigue?
Are they strong enough compared to the other side?
Are they mentally confident enough to compete again?

At PMST, we help athletes progress from rehab to training to sport-specific performance, so they are not just cleared, but actually prepared.

Do I need a referral to start physical therapy?

No referral is required for many patients to begin physical therapy in Texas.

That means you can start with PMST first instead of waiting weeks to see another provider just to be told to try PT.

If we evaluate you and believe you need imaging, an orthopedic consult, or a different medical provider, we will help guide you in that direction.

PT first does not mean PT only.

It means you get answers sooner and start the right plan faster.

When should I get an injury checked out?

You should get an injury or movement issue checked out if you notice:

  • Pain lasting more than a few days
  • Pain that keeps coming back
  • Swelling
  • Limping
  • Weakness
  • Loss of mobility
  • Pain with running, jumping, lifting, or throwing
  • Pain that changes your form
  • Pain that worsens during activity
  • A recent sprain, strain, fall, or collision
  • Your athlete avoiding certain movements
  • Loss of confidence after injury

Do not wait until a small issue becomes a bigger one.

A quick assessment can save weeks of frustration.

Who should schedule a summer injury or movement assessment?

This is a good fit for:

  • Youth athletes preparing for fall sports
  • High school athletes training over the summer
  • College athletes home for the summer
  • Runners dealing with nagging pain
  • Golfers with back, hip, shoulder, or elbow pain
  • Pickleball and tennis players with knee, calf, shoulder, or Achilles issues
  • Active adults trying to stay consistent
  • Parents who are not sure if their athlete needs PT
  • Anyone who wants to move better and avoid injury

Summer injury prevention tips

Here are a few simple ways to reduce injury risk this summer:

Ramp up slowly.
Do not go from doing nothing to training five days a week overnight.

Warm up before activity.
A good warmup should include movement, mobility, activation, and sport-specific prep.

Strength train.
Stronger athletes are generally more durable athletes.

Recover on purpose.
Sleep, hydration, nutrition, mobility, and rest days matter.

Pay attention to pain.
Pain is information. Ignoring it does not make you tougher. It usually just makes the problem bigger.

Get assessed early.
If something feels off, get it checked before it becomes a true injury.

Why this matters before fall sports

For football, volleyball, soccer, cross country, cheer, basketball, and other fall sports, summer is not just downtime. It is preparation time.

The athletes who enter the season strong, mobile, conditioned, and healthy usually have an advantage.

The athletes who enter the season already hurting are often playing catch-up before the first game even starts.

That is why summer training, movement assessments, and early injury care matter so much.
