What to Expect and Why We Do Things This Way
At PMST, our goal is simple. To make sure you’re getting the right care, at the right time, without unnecessary delays.
Texas law allows you to begin physical therapy without a referral. This is called Direct Access, and it’s a great option for many people.
At the same time, physical therapy does not replace medical care, and physical therapists do not diagnose medical conditions. Because of that, Texas law places limits on how long care can continue without medical involvement.
Here’s how we approach it.
What Direct Access Means (and What It Doesn’t)
Direct Access means you can start physical therapy right away.
It does not mean:
- Physical therapy replaces a medical evaluation
- A medical provider is unnecessary
- Steps are skipped if something needs closer attention
Physical therapists are highly trained movement experts, but diagnosing medical conditions and directing medical care is handled by licensed medical providers.
Why We Encourage an Early Medical Evaluation
At PMST, we strongly encourage an independent medical evaluation early in care. In most cases, that means after your first physical therapy visit.
We do this because early medical involvement:
- Helps confirm physical therapy is the right approach
- Prevents delays later in care
- Avoids interruptions related to insurance or medical findings
- Ensures nothing important gets missed
The medical provider independently evaluates your condition and decides whether physical therapy should:
- Continue as planned
- Be modified
- Pause while something else is addressed
That decision is made independently of your physical therapist.
What Is Required Under Texas Law
Texas law allows physical therapy without a prescription for a limited period (up to 30 days).
To continue care beyond that timeframe:
- A prescription for physical therapy is required
- The prescription may come from any licensed medical provider you choose
If a prescription is not obtained within that window, physical therapy must pause until one is received.
Do I Have to See a PMST Medical Provider?
No.
You are always free to see:
- Your primary care provider
- A chiropractor
- A nurse practitioner
- Any licensed medical provider you trust
If you choose an outside provider, simply have them send us a prescription for physical therapy via fax to: 972-212-6851
What If I Don’t Want to See a Medical Provider Right Away?
That’s completely your choice.
You may continue temporarily under Direct Access, as long as a prescription is obtained within the legally allowed timeframe.
Our team will help explain your options so your care stays smooth and uninterrupted.
Care Coordination at PMST
One advantage of PMST is that multiple healthcare disciplines are available under one roof. For many patients, this can make coordination of care more convenient if they choose to receive care here.
Medical decisions are always made independently by each provider, and you are never required to keep your care within PMST.
Our Commitment to You
Everything about this process exists to:
- Protect your health
- Keep care moving forward
- Avoid unnecessary delays
- Make sure treatment is appropriate from the start
